Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass.
Earlier on I downloaded a "Peter Nero" L/P of "Herb Alpert" hits and said "If you didn't know it wasn't "Herb Alpert" you wouldn't know or words to that effect !!!...Anyway here is the man himself with 16 of his well known hits...they are all there !!...Bit of music trivia coming up...His first hit "Lonely Bull" was supposed to have been recorded in a garage on an old Tape recorder deck no studio equipment !!...whether or not that is true who knows...but I recon that they must have cleaned it up in the studio and that little man that fiddles with the knobs and sliders did his thing !!! If It's True !

That story about the origins of the 1st album is nonsense, but the real story is even better. A bunch of the hottest LA studio musicians were asked to record the album as a favor to a record big shot who didn't want to take a chance on Herb and his style of music. It was a scab (non-union) date, and paid each musician probably $15. The single "Spanish Flea" gets released, it goes to No. 1, and so Herb goes to the union, admits to the scab date, pays the union a fine, and then pays each musician scale for the date (which he didn't have to do). Forever after that, no matter what musicians Herb toured with, he always had the same collection of LA studio guys (known as The Wrecking Crew) playing on all his albums.
ReplyDeleteHi...
ReplyDeletethe story about the lonely bull is true, the version on the original album wich is the same as the one on the greatest hits is a studio version released in 1963, just recently the version that you mention was released along with other songs never released before by Jasmine Records: Herb Alpert - From Legal Eagles to Tijuana Brass (1958-1962).
Thanks DougR & Annon For The additional Info....Cheers Guy's !
