The covers of this L/P is what I got from the internet mine are ripped and in tatters....This as you see is the soundtrack from the film and it seems that the only two people that actually sang was "Mitzi Gaynor" & "Ray Walston"...all the rest were dubbed by different people....shame they didn't get actors that could sing to be in it !!

South Pacific was a 1958 American musical film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, The film, directed by Joshua Logan, starred Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr and Ray Walston in the leading roles with Juanita Hall

Hanalei Bay on Kauai, one of the Hawaiian Islands, and the island of Es Vedrà in Spain served as the filming locations
All of the songs from the stage production were retained for the film. A song entitled My Girl Back Home, sung by Lt. Cable and Nellie, cut from the Broadway show, was added ( it's in this song that Nellie stated that she was from Little Rock US ..in 1958 !!! )
The song "You got to be Carefully Taught" was first removed from the movie ( because of it's political isue) but Rodgers & Hammerstein got it back again , saying it's was the song that was saying the meaning of the movie theme !
If you listen close to the ending of "Wonderfull Guy" you will hear Gaynor "fell" out of the tune.
And in " this Nearly was mine " Rossano Brasso sound like he sings Nellie enstead of Nearly.
Juanita Hall ( Bloody Mary ) had her singing dubbed for the film version by Muriel Smith,
Opera star Giorgio Tozzi provided the singing voice for Rossano Brazzi
John Kerr voice was dubbed by Bill Lee
Mitzi Gaynor and Walston were the only principal cast members whose own singing voices were used.
.The film was produced in a 35 mm normal and a 70mm Todd-AO special for the new widescreen format .
The film includes the use of colored filters during many of the song sequences which has been a source of criticism for the film. Director Joshua Logan wanted it to be a subtle change, but 20th Century Fox, the company that would distribute the 35mm version, made it an extreme change but since tickets to the film were pre-sold they had no time to correct
Criticism of the color filters did not prevent the film from topping the box office of 1958 in America. In London, the film played continuously for nearly four-and-a-half years.
The soundtrack album has spent more weeks at #1 in the UK Albums Chart than any other album ever since It spent 70 consecutive weeks at the top of the chart and was #1 for the whole of 1959.
The movie Originally shown in a nearly three-hour version, later cut to two-and-a-half hours for general release. The three-hour version, long feared lost, was rediscovered in a 70mm print A 2-disc DVD set of both the longer and shorter versions was released in 2006

Good info Dusty. Further to Luigi's comments, if MGM had obtained the rights to the film, the casting should have been Howard Keel or Gordon Macrae as Emile, Jane Powell as Nellie and Vic Damone as Cable.Shame Doris passed on the role of Nellie - she would have been great.
