Some early Nina Simone tracks 1962 to be exact...Its different with some duff tracks and some very good ones !!....The pianist Nina shines through !!...saying that though it is still a good L/P that needs listening too more than once !!

Nina Simone was on her way to becoming a major name by 1962, with her protest and civil rights songs granting her acclaim and recognition far beyond the jazz world. Sings Ellington is a change of pace for the singer/pianist, who is heard performing 11 songs written by Duke Ellington and/or Billy Strayhorn. Backed by an unidentified string orchestra (the accompaniment is often sparse) and the Malcolm Dodds Singers, she not only revives the usual Duke hits but such obscurities as "Hey, Buddy Bolden," "Merry Mending," and "You Better Know It." None of these performances sound like a typical treatment of Ellington material, with "I Got It Bad" having a gospel feel, "Something to Live For" being brief but heartfelt, "I Like the Sunrise" sounding like a big production number, and "Satin Doll" being taken as an instrumental. Though short in length, what is here is quite intriguing and original.

Here is Nina at her singing best and includes a couple of tracks of her on the piano proving just how good a pianist she was....This compilation by "Polydor" includes some of her great tracks...When I first bought this L/P I thought maybe it was some re-recordings that she had made at some time in her career but no they seem to be the original "Bethlehem" recordings....Just checked on "Google" and it seems that it is the first L/P that Nina did for "Bethlehem Records"just re-released with one track missing by "Polydor"....So enjoy a great unique voice !

 This compilation combines Nina's early live performances with some of her early studio recordings.......On this set of recordings I prefer her "Live" ones.....On side one the first three tracks are from her L/P  "Nina At The Town Hall" and they are great !! not sure about the others.....Its a good L/P and well worth a listen to !!!!...and track four and five on side one proves that she can sing a quiet songs with feeling !!!

Nina Simone's recording of "I Put A Spell On You" is one of the best on record plus her recording of "Feeling Good"makes this L/P a must for all lovers of great music !!It was recorded in 1965...the track "One September Day" proves that she could sing soft..sweet and simple !!!

 This was recorded in September 1959 in New York and is one of the best L/P's of Nina's there was not enough gaps in the tracks so I had to record Side One as  Track 1 and Side Two as Track 2...Just listen to "The Other Woman" & "You Can Have Him" for sheer perfection
