 Here's an unusual Judy Garland L/P highlighting the Concept of the "Concept Albums" !!.......The Letter is a 1959 concept album by American vocalist Judy Garland arranged by Gordon Jenkins chronicling a relationship, the album features John Ireland

Conceived by arranger Gordon Jenkins as a relationship concept album (with one side each from the man and the woman), The Letter turned into something quite different when Capitol requested it be turned into Judy Garland's next LP. Garland and her narrator co-star, past Academy Award nominee John Ireland, look back at their relationship -- trading dialogue, singing reflective songs, and reading excerpts from "the letter," which he has written to her as one last plea before the end of their love affair. Jenkins' ambitious concept was written well and executed perfectly, and no one was better than Garland for a dramatic romantic role encompassing hope and humour. And yet, The Letter suffers, as all but the best concept albums do. Ireland is no match for Garland (fortunately his role is much smaller), and the few audio concepts on display tend toward gimmicks -- occasional sound effects, a humorous conversation between Garland and Ireland while a bluesman is singing at a Greenwich Village dive, and the Ralph Brewster Singers, who intrude very seldom but are stuck harmonizing at least one line that should never have been harmonized quite so reverently -- "It was just another saloon, with pretty good food." None of these songs were performed much afterwards, but they are very good; "The Worst Kind of Man," "That's All There Is, There Isn't Any More," and "The Red Balloon" would do well in anyone's repertoire. In all, The Letter is a fair concept album, its interruptions annoying but its overall power raised by the twin talents of Judy Garland and Gordon Jenkins. Capitol certainly pulled out all the stops in its recording and release; the original three-track stereo recording is exquisite, and upon its initial release, special copies of "the letter" were placed in envelopes and taped to the front of each record jacket.

This is Judy in a very subdued mood with brilliant orchestrations by "Gordon Jenkins"...Judy made 2 or 3 brilliant recordings for Capitol before the "Histrionics"and "Frenzy" recordings came about and this is one of them!!....no gimics just plain singing and she has got an  individual voice !!....Best Track "Mean To Me "

Track 1 on this L/P the orchestration by Nelson Riddle is one of the best !!...I bet Judy was out of breath when she finished the track...This is Judy at her vocal peak the rest of the tracks are all good... a good cross section of songs that fits her voice like a glove...just listen and be "Wowed"..

Ok !  her voice wasn't at its best BUT considering what we know now it is a fitting Epitaph for a great singer...And I think that you had to be there to appreciate the performance 100%

  Here we have Judy performing songs that seem to be taken from her TV shows and "Live Performances"...but there is no audience participation...so I wonder if this is a Studio recording or have they cut out the enthusiastic shouting and clapping that usualy happens when Judy was performing !!

 On this L/P by Judy we seem to have a mixture of tracks from her "Live Recordings" or maybe from her Television Shows and tracks from her studio L/P's....as usual she does a great job on all the songs....and if you are a Judy Garland Fan you'll love it !!

Unfortunately the live performances don't come over on record as good as the Studio recordings so in my opinion "Capitol " Records falls short of the title "Tribute" !!.....Some of the CD's compilations of the same material that I have heard are far more superior than this L/P so if you do like the content Nip down to the record store and see whats there !!

Now this I believe might be a rare 45 EP of Judy's it was recorded in1964 and was probably recorded in London when she was filming "I Could Go On Singing"....all the tracks have the Garland stamp on them and the only one that I am familiar with is "Its Yourself" !!
