Frank Sinatra

The year is 1966 and Sinatra was 50 and his voice was at its peak singing or should I say swingin' with the Count Basie Band... this is a great live performance and if you like Sinatra you will love it !!!...here's some quotes from Sinatra himself about that night when the recording machines were switched on !!!

Frank Sinatra say's about playing with Basie at the Sands in January 1966
“The Basie orchestra was a like juggernaut. When they came at you, after the downbeat and the orchestra started to play, you knew that you had to be part of that or you got lost. We did things that were really jumping  I tried to stay in the realm of what the orchestra was playing. I hang back just a little bit, in a sense.”
“You cannot swing if a band doesn’t settle into the proper tempo. I don’t care how good you are, it just doesn’t come out right.”
“This is the greatest orchestra at any time in the history of the world.”

Vaughn Monroe--Stan Kenton--Max Bygraves--Frank Sinatra

So we have featured L/p's.. 45 rpm's.. Extended play 45's..CD's and recently 12 inch 45's....so lets go back to some original sounds on 78's.. I do have another Music Blog that has only got 78's on it...thought that I will occasionally feature some of the posts....Ran out of 78's still waiting to get some ...so enjoy some nostalgic sounds sometime with all the snap crackles and pops that came with the 78's when they were well played...got a filter on them to take most of that out but sometimes when they are old ones and well worn !!...but on the whole 90% of them could have been recorded recently !!

For the first post we have some popular artists that were popular in the 50's in the following posts perhaps not so well known...But nostalgia is the name of the game on here !!...also a selection of Classics will be making an appearance so a great cross section of music will be featured that we enjoyed in the bygone days !

1. The Maharajah Of Magador......Vaughn Monroe & Orchestra
2. Dardanella......Vaughn Monroe & Orchestra
3. Tequila......Stan Kenton & Orchestra
4. Cuban Mumble......Stan Kenton
5. Seventeen Tons......Max Bygraves

Just for a change I thought that I would post the first post of my other Blog of 78's rpm....the quality on the first few of posts on this blog was not to bad....It took me a while to master the filters on my recording app...these days the Quality is great you wouldn't know that they are Shellac 78's...unless of course they were really old and played a lot with the dreaded Steel Needle !!

For the first post we have some popular artists that were popular in the 50's in the following posts perhaps not so well known...But nostalgia is the name of the game on here!!...also a selection of Classics will be making an appearance so a great cross section of music will be featured that we enjoyed in the bygone days!

One of Sinatra's very popular L/P's....nearly as good as "Swingin' Lovers"....On the British release of this L/P "On The Road To Mandalay"was not on it ..it was replaced by another track..I believe that it was something to do with the estate of "Rudyard Kipling" they did'nt like what Sinatra had done with it....this one is an American release so it's on it...Arn't we "Brits" picky!!!...if its true !!...Can anyone out there verify that !!

This L/P as you can see from the cover was recorded in London 57 years ago !!..WOW doesn't time fly !!...wish I had a time machine to go back to "Swingin' London" in the 60's..I had a great time there would do it all over again..even the sad times were good !!..anyway enuff of me rattling on and get back to the songs....Sinatra in good voice not a "Swinger" in sight just a nice relaxing set of "Great British Songs"...Must admit tho' hadn't heard of last track !!

Frank Sinatra

Here's a very unusal Frank Sinatra L/P...this is the first time I have heard it !..and the more I hear it the better it becomes !!.....difficult to pick a track to download as all the songs are original to the concept !

The songs were co-written by Jake Holmes. It is the only album Sinatra ever voiced over pre-recorded orchestral tracks. The album was released to mixed critical reviews and poor sales, Sinatra's only major album release not to crack the Billboard Top 100; the packaging was uncharacteristic of typical Sinatra album designs.
The album's orchestral tracks were recorded in New York at Columbia 30th Street Studio, also referred to as "The Church". Unlike previous work, Sinatra did not record with the orchestra, but he did attend the recording sessions for the music. He recorded his vocals over the prerecorded tracks at United/Western Studios on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. He would never again record his vocals without a live orchestra.

Frank Sinatra’s Watertown album was produced and co-written by Bob Gaudio in 1970. It is considered to be Sinatra’s most ambitious concept album, as well as his most difficult record.
With co-writer Jake Holmes, Gaudio created a song cycle focusing on a middle-aged, small-town man whose wife left him with the kids. Constructed as a series of brief lyrical snapshots that read like letters or soliloquies, the culminating effect of the songs is an atmosphere of loneliness, but it is a loneliness without much hope or romance — it is the sound of a broken man. This concept album was arranged by Charles Calello.

Frank Sinatra

Here's Sinatra singing on "Reprise" some "Modern Classics" as opposed to "Standards !!
Again the "Greatest Hits 2" title to my mind doesn't fit...It would have been better titled "Sinatra Sings Great Songs Of Today" as as far as I am aware the only "Hit"on this one is "My Way"......That doesn't take away the fact that this is a great L/P sung as only "Sinatra" did....it's the "Marketing People"that always seem to get it wrong !!!!
