Had a Pint with John Baldry in a pub in London in the 60's !!...Great Memories !!
John William "Long John" Baldry (12 January 1941 – 21 July 2005) was an English-Canadian blues singer and voice actor. He sang with many British musicians, with Rod Stewart and Elton John appearing in bands led by Baldry in the 1960s. He enjoyed pop success in the UK where Let the Heartaches Begin reached No. 1 in 1967 and in Australia where his duet with Kathi McDonald You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' reached number two in 1980. Baldry lived in Canada from the late 1970s until his death....In the early 1960s, he sang with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, with whom he recorded the first British blues album in 1962, R&B from the Marquee. At stages, Mick Jagger, Jack Bruce and Charlie Watts were members of this band while Keith Richards and Brian Jones played on stage.
In 1963, Baldry joined the Cyril Davies R&B All Stars with Nicky Hopkins playing piano. He took over in 1964 after the death of Cyril Davies, and the group became Long John Baldry and his Hoochie Coochie Men featuring Rod Stewart on vocals....In 1965, the Hoochie Coochie Men became Steampacket with Baldry and Stewart as male vocalists, Julie Driscoll as the female vocalist and Brian Auger on Hammond organ. After Steampacket broke up in 1966, Baldry formed Bluesology.
In 1967, he recorded a pop song "Let the Heartaches Begin" that went to number one in Britain, followed by a 1968 top 20 hit titled "Mexico", which was the theme of the UK Olympic team that year. "Let the Heartaches Begin" made the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Baldry was still touring, doing gigs with Bluesology, but the band refused to back his rendition of "Let the Heartaches Begin", and left the stage while he performed to a backing-tape played on a large Revox tape-recorder.

I'm looking for years after the LKP froim John John Baldry " Let there be long John" originally released on LKP Pye NSLP 18228 in 1968
Cam somebody help to find this really hard to find LP
Best wishes, Albert
just found this page at random after searching for info on the Let There Be Long John lp, re the message from Albert above - i think this lp was never released, BUT last week i found the cover, no lp inside though. i have a very big lp collection of uk artists and all his other lps, i started to look on the net for another copy as mine is missing the vinyl, and realised it does not seem to exist! that would explain why you are having trouble finding it! ive only done 10 mins research, maybe there is a copy out there, but its listed in all guides as "UNISSUED". the cover i have is fully laminated, back-flaps, UK pye, cover shot shows the same chair as on his first lp, but different format. back sleeve notes are a bit risque and by LIONEL BART, the lp is not on discogs. i wonder if it was withdrawn from release due to the sleevenote but covers were printed? and i luckily found a cover, i may post it onto the discogs website within a few weeks. if anyone has the actual disc for this lp please contact me via magnu@email.com thanks!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately another link died. Any chance of a new link with a FLAC please? Thank you :)
