Ella Fitzgerald

One of Ella's L/P's that I missed first time around.

Get Happy! Review by Scott Yanow (AllMusic)
Recorded during the period of time when Ella Fitzgerald cut her famous series of "songbooks," this set is a bit of a hodge-podge, drawing its 14 selections from six different dates which find Ella backed by orchestras led by either Nelson Riddle, Frank DeVol, Russ Garcia or Paul Weston. "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" was previously available as just a single while "Swingin' Shepherd Blues" (an alternate take) was previously unreleased. As usual, Ella uplifts all of the material and her best moments come on "Somebody Loves Me," a heartfelt "Moonlight Becomes You," a scat-filled "Blue Skies" and (somewhat surprisingly) "St. Louis Blues." Although this was not her most essential release, the formerly obscure Get Happy finds Ella Fitzgerald at the peak of her powers.

1. Somebody Loves Me
2. Cheerful Little Earful
3. You Make Me Feel So Young
4. Beat Me Daddy Eight To The Bar
5. Like Young

4. Gypsy In My Soul
5. Goody Goody
6. St Louis Blues
7. A Tisket A Tasket
8. Swingin' Shepherd Blues

Ella Fitzgerald

Now its me that's purring !!......Ella in first class concert mode....wish I had been at this concert !!
Ella's Having a Ball !!....having seen her in Concert about 5 times the atmosphere must have been Electric !!!

Hidden away for decades, the 2020 Ella Fitzgerald archival release Ella: The Lost Berlin Tapes showcases the singer in an ebullient live performance in Germany in 1962. The concert was recorded on March 25, 1962, in Berlin's Sportpalast Arena, two years after her classic 1960 concert albums Mack the Knife: Ella in Berlin and Ella Returns to Berlin. The main reason for the tapes to have gone unheard for so long was primarily due to Fitzgerald's manager and Verve label owner Norman Granz having left the label by the time they were recorded. Subsequently, they ended up languishing in Granz's private archive for over 50 years. As on her other Berlin concert albums, Fitzgerald is joined here by her trio with pianist Paul Smith, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Stan Levey. The original Ella in Berlin concert was made famous by Fitzgerald's rendition of "Mack the Knife," in which she forgot the lyrics and deftly improvised her own to uproarious effect -- something she was known to do periodically throughout her career. On the Lost Berlin Tapes, Fitzgerald again tackles the Threepenny Opera standard, diving into the song with her characteristically diamond-tipped vocal prowess. Performed at a briskly swinging pace and punctuated by a humorous aside to the earlier Bobby Darin and Louis Armstrong versions, this "Mack the Knife" is fairly definitive, besting both the Ella in Berlin and Ella Returns to Berlin versions in sheer virtuosity. Equally thrilling performances follow, including rousing takes on "My Kind of Boy," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Taking a Chance on Love," "Mr. Paganini," and more. While the focus of any Fitzgerald concert is her voice, her trio supplies enthusiastic and nuanced support throughout with Smith offering a small jazz ensemble's worth of riffs to frame her vocals. With the discovery of Ella: The Lost Berlin Tapes, fans now have a triumvirate of stellar live German concerts from Fitzgerald, each one showcasing just how immensely dazzling and quick-witted she could be.

The Sandpipers

The Sandpipers were an American easy listening trio who carved a niche in 1960s folk rock with their vocals and innovative arrangements of international ballads and pop standards. They are best remembered for their cover version of "Guantanamera", which became a transatlantic Top 10 hit in 1966, and their Top 20 hit "Come Saturday Morning" from the soundtrack of the film The Sterile Cuckoo in 1970.

Les Elgart

Some well known songs / tunes with a Twist !!

Lester Elliott Elgart (August 3, 1917 – July 29, 1995, Dallas, Texas) was an American swing jazz bandleader and trumpeter.
American swing band leader, formerly lead trumpet player for the orchestras of Bunny Berigan, Charlie Spivak and Hal McIntyre. In 1945, Les formed his own organisation in Brooklyn, New York, in tandem with his alto saxophonist-playing brother Larry Elgart. The band, its theme song being "Sophisticated Swing", featured superior arrangements by Bill Finegan and a young Nelson Riddle. It enjoyed a measure of popular success -- until the Musician's Union recording strike and personal rivalry between the brothers caused a break-up. Les and Larry went their separate ways, but neither managed to succeed on their own. They re-formed in 1953, with breezy new arrangements by Charles Albertine and an emphasis on ensemble sound, rather than solos. This melodic approach proved popular and album sales (recording contract with Columbia) boomed. The Les Elgart Orchestra performed at many top venues.
