Cleo Laine & Johnny Dankworth - Oh Lady Be Good

Barry Manilow

Still keeping in the "Bob" mode we have a slightly different "BM" giving his "Swing" tonsils a good airing !!...seems that he giving his singing voice a few style changes which is great for the listener...you can only listen to a certain amount of "Big Power Ballads"before you put the ear-plugs in !!!...Barry does a great job with these tracks and his voice is spot on !!!

      3. Stardust.

Barry Manilow

From one "Barry Manilow" to another this time he dips into his "Jazzy" side and does a great job and may surprise many people !!....Thanks once again to "Belguim Bob"!!!....No information on the back sleeve about who wrote the songs...They are all original no standards so I assume that "Barry" has written them !!

JOHNNY MATHIS - BEGUIN THE BEGUINE -

Earl Bostic....320 Kbps

The first "Jazz" 78rpm that I bought when I was in my teens was "Earl Bostic's Flamingo"
of course didn't realise at the time that it was a Jazz Record I just liked the rasping sound of the Tenor Sax...It was on a "Vogue" label and as I said a very brittle 78rpm and they did break very easy...I think it lasted about a couple of years before it got smashed up with a load more when I was taking some of them to play at a mates house on my bike and I fell of my bike and they shattered all over the road....didn't have the comfort of a car in those days !!...Anyway back to the L/P most of the tracks are well known songs and are all played in the "Earl Bostic" rasping tenor sax sound so no surprises there....best track of course is "Flamingo" which to me is as fresh sounding today as it was in the 50's...

1. Flamingo
2. Deep Purple
3. Always
4. Moonglow
5. Cherokee

1. Liebestraum
2. When Your Lover Has Gone
3. East Of The Sun
4. Beyond the Blue Horizon
5. Harlem Nocturne

The Four Aces

One of the most successful pre-rock vocal groups, the Four Aces did well during the early '50s with a narrow range of pop material but burned out before decade's end. Founded by Navy shipmates Al Alberts and Dave Mahoney, the act added Lou Silvestri and Sol Vaccaro before making a name for themselves around their native Philadelphia. Alberts left the group in 1958 to try to make it as a soloist, but never made the charts...It was then that Diodati led a new line-up, which consisted of Diodati, Alesi, Giglio, and Harry Heisler. After almost 19 years with the group, Alesi developed a medical condition that forced him to leave the group....In 1975, Diodati, Alesi, Giglio, and Heisler were awarded the right to the name in a court suit in which the original members tried to re-establish their right. The court allowed the founding members to tour as "The Original Four Aces, Featuring Al Alberts", which they did, finally retiring the act in 1987.

I believe that these are not the original 50's recordings but re- recordings of some of their hits....It is Al Alberts on the front cover....so I guess that it should have said
"The Original Four Aces, Featuring Al Alberts.

Don Mclean 's "And I Love You So" & "I Write The Songs" were not around in the 50's !!

      Thanks Bob !!!

      6. Heart And Soul.

I bought this L/P for just for one track "One Less Bell To Answer" and also the fact that the cover is painted by one of my favourite artists "Leroy Neiman" persuaded me to buy it.....I never did play it much because I didn't think that the rest of the songs matched the brilliance of "Bell"......Listening to it again after all the years have flown by I don't think that my opinion has changed !!...No doubt there will be people out there who will disagree.........Sooooooooo leave a comment !!!

Your Own Thing....320 Kbps

Here's another show that I know nothing about....Its says on the back sleeve that it was an Off Broadway Musical...but it seems to have played at the "Comedy Theatre" in London in about 1968 or thereabouts....Its the original New York Cast and there is some fine singers in it....there is not as far as I know any well known songs from it....but I think its a case of "You have to see it " to apreciate it to the full....be great if someone who has seen it could make a comment about it and fill in all the empty spaces !!!!

Leo Sayer....320 Kbps

These compilation L/P's do a great job of putting together most of the hits from a performer...Sometimes they only put a couple of hits together and fill the rest of the L/P with tracks that nobody has heard of....But on this one they deliver ok !!
The first side contains most of "Leo's"well known hit singles....And they are all produced by Once again "Richard Perry".....The second side is mainly tracks from some of his earlier L/P's produced by his manager at that time "Adam Faith"......So I reckon that you get Two "Leo Sayer's" for your listening pleasure!!!
